So where does Moroccan Oil come from?

Moroccan Oil comes from a fruit called Argan and is grown in a small area of Morocco on Argan trees. These trees are incredibly rare and are only grown in a handful of areas across the world. In Morocco, they are only grown in one area, an area of land which is 25,900 square kilometres and between two mountains, the Atlantic and the Atlas. How is it made?

The oil is found inside the argan fruit. The fruits are collected and opened to reveal the nut and oil inside. Slowly and carefully the content is grounded down. And not much oil is collected from a single fruit, it takes 32kg of fruit to make 1 litre of Moroccan Oil, that’s one whole tree!

Who makes Moroccan Oil?

The people who make Moroccan Oil are called the Berber Women. For many years, Berber Women traditionally produce and make the oil, collecting the fruit and finding the oil inside. And for the women of Morocco, producing the oil is beneficial. They are able to be guaranteed a competitive salary. They are taught with the help of cooperatives about environmental programs, business skills, and can actively participate in the decision making processes. Equal opportunities and equal rights are provided for these women.

With the role the Berber women have on the production of argan oil, women cooperatives were set up not just to help the Berber women with the production and distribution of the oil, but with the protection of the oil itself. Because of the benefits the argan trees give, cooperatives have been set up to make sure that the trees and their fruits are not over harvested or taken advantage of. More trees are being planted to ensure a continuous supply of oil and continuous work for the Berber women.
